I have a rather large crayfish that is outgrowing his 2.5 gallon home (Actually, he's about as long as the tank is wide). I want to move him to a 10 gallon or even a huge rubbermaid container for the summer. I had considered putting a small shoal of Cherry Barbs in with him but have never had any before and was wondering if they would be ate? He eats everything, and I mean everything! But if the Cherry Barbs are quick swimmers, then he might not have a chance to catch them. Anyn other suggestions would work as well. Thanks.

yes, solitary unless you can provide a huge tank. Crayfish will eat anything small enough to catch and be eaten by anything large enough to swallow them. They will even kill eachother. rarely have I heard of more than one in any space. in the wild they can escape from eachother, in a tank they are cornered and a dominant individual will arise. Kyle
yes the general rule is one to a tank and species tank only, having said that they could be housed with larger fish but most be given plenty of hiding spaces to avoid becoming food.
i have successfully bred them in a aquarium but the female ate the male shortly after mating, the juveniles eventually killed each other off as well.
i had them in a 75g with a pleco and pirahana, after it was all said and done i was left with only two and they lived at opposite sides of the tank until one decided otherwise.
so they are extremely territorial.
