Crayfish....

Hi all -
I haven't posted on here in about 6 months and have a new screen name but I am glad to be back. Everyone on this board has always been so helpful:)

I have a 30g, up and running for three years...no problems with water quality, or diseases.
I do not have live plants. My tank consists of 2 silver dollars, 4 black tetras , two diamond tetras, and one neon.


My silver dollars are my two original fish. All of the others have been added over time. One of them is a little aggressive (chases the others).

My question: Could I add a crayfish?
 
Cool critters, but will eat anything they can, and try to eat the fish that are too big, which results in ripped fins, and skittish fish. I had a 4 inch Cray terrorize two 6" oscars once untill he was removed. Never again in a fish tank (maybe someday in his own tank, )
 
In my opinion it all depends on the crayfish. I have a 4-5 inch (body size minus claws) who has never touched a fish, fast, slow, healthy or sick. Individuals like mine seem to be rare though

Don't be so sure, I have the same sitaution. My two are housed with 6 Ghost Shrimp, 3 Otocinclus, and 1 Wood Shrimp...they bother absolutely no one and don't even fight one another. And what's even more odd is that my name is Ryan as well, haha. No lie...
 
if i may add some insight. i have kept crays for a while now and would like to think i know alot about them... though i learn something new everyday. crays depending on species like fish can be more aggressive or less agressive then others. ihave dozens by now and lost dozens.. from having an over corwded tank to mothers eating there hatchlings and fish lookin for a protein rich meal. whateva the case may be you should watch the crays behavior. put him or her in a bucket or a QT if you have one or in the tank your going to house them in but take extra precaution on the last one. you have to really keep an eye on him or her. i have several crays now that are harmless to one another but do eat guppies. i just bought a red cave, and the two tadpoles i had in the tank are gone...GONE and two small blues canabalizied (spell check). ive had a couple or bigger crays in 2 diff 55's and became meals the fish ate them..... and the fish werent even cichlids.
all in all if your going to put them in a show tank or display tank watch them closely. if they're "worthy" of being housed with your show tank then provide them with a cave a peace of pvc a lava rock with a hole..... something to hang out in so they dont become food hope this helps.
