Started off my tank with 3 zebra danios and – I have to say – these little guys are the funniest fish ever! They’re just so busy and curious – so fun to keep and watch. Anyone else experience the following (just wondering if it’s typical danio behavior or just my 3 Musketeers):

-- They literally swarm around the Ph/Ammonia sticks when you’re testing the water.

-- Wherever you trace your finger across the outside of the tank, they’ll follow it. It’s like playing “go fetch” but with fish!

-- They’re hardly shy and love to swim and display - right in front - as you watch them.

-- When you turn off the lights, they go panicky, swim around at the top and then chill out and rest.

-- They just never ever stop chasing each other around the tank. Hilarious.

Danios...I only have 3 so far...but they have to be the most amusing fish. Any other Danio Diehards out there?

ive had somebefore but not in a long long time. i did buy about 2 dozen the other day from the feeder tank to see if they could live in my 40 gallon with some bigger fish though. if you get about 20 more or so for your tank you will have a much better expierence with them i think. they enjoy the group.

YES! Get a larger group and you will see even more cool group behavior...Zebra danios are a good fish to start with, and a good first egg layer to breed, if you are so inclined....enjoy! Hmmm...I haven't had zebra danios in about 30 years...I'm sure there's an empty tank around here somewhere... :sim:

Thanks very much for the info, guys.

I'm certainly planning on adding more zebras. Do you guys have suggestions on how many I should add and at which intervals? I've read somewhere that that I should add just 1 every 2 wks. Is it possible to add more with each interval i.e. without overloading re: bioload? Thanks.

Ya zebras are great especially in large schools. Your post was funny. :joe:

I have one zebra danio, along with my white clouds and neons. At first, I only had one zebra danio with three white cloud minnows and the danio (which was bigger than the minnows by only a bit) never stopped chasing the minnows, darting around and around the tank. Then as I added more minnows as well as the tetras, the minnows and tetras would school around together, and the lone danio wouldn't join them, prefering to glide and swim about slowly in the bottom layer if the tank, only coming up in a frenzy to mix with the rest of the school to grab a bite during feeding time.

The danio does act crazy sometimes, as mentioned, seems sometimes restless, darting and zooming about, looping and swimming for no apparent reason. It will also swim against the side of the tank, sliding along. Other times, it stops being hyper and casually glides slowly along the bottom.

Also, my zebra danio sometimes likes to play with the air pump for some reason. It seems to intentionally swim up to it and swim against the current until it pushes it away. It will repeat this often.

zebra danio is one of my favorites

Once your tank is fully established, a couple at a time every couple weeks should be more than fine....add some Stability by Seachem as insurance..it boosts bacteria...
