my friend once had a fish bowl like a 1 gallon i believe with 3 of the fair goldfish they had them for 4 yrs and they ended up being like 4inches each and then they went on vacation for a week and they still were alive then they didnt feed them for 2 months and they were all still alive. they didnt want them anymore sadly and flushed them.! u can believe this or not but its true. i wish i had that luck with goldfish.

my friend kept one in a betta house, and swears she never treated the tapwater, and i guess he lived for a few years. i don't beleive it tho.
reading that first post, the goldfish don't strike me as crazy. your friend, on the other hand. . .
I'm thinking your friend's parents just kept buying new goldfish and replacing them when he wasn't looking.
