crazy sea star

So I just got a yellow watchman goby, about 1.5", a couple of days ago. He was doing great until just now when I watched my sea star eat him. I couldn't see where the goby went and then I saw his tail sticking out from under the star. I tried to drag the star out from between the rocks he hid in, but he got away goby and all. The star is probably 3" leg to leg. Has anyone ever heard of this happening? This really sucks :mad:
 
Do you target feed the star? Stars go after fish only when they are starving. They must be target fed--the scraps from fish are not enough for them to survive. Sorry this happened, but it is common with serpents and brittles that are not target fed.
 
it was grey. I thought I was feeding it enough. I was feeding it every other day 3-4 pretty big pieces of krill. I guess that wasn't enough. I hate learning stuff the hard way :mad:
 
I'm not trying to argue with you but, the gray ones are usually harmless. They normally only eat things that are dead or dieing. Are you sure it was in good health? The only other thing I can think of other than starvation is that it's a variety that's not commonly imported. I'm really sorry for the loss you wouldn' have a pic or a link to a pic would you?
 
the watchman may have been a little stresed, but his behavior seemed pretty normal. Also, the star may have been a little more starved than i first thought. I'm learning!
 
We are all learning matter! Accidents happen fwiw the star will be a good addition to your tank and help keep it clean. I'd keep an eye on it though and if anything like this happens again I'd get rid of it.
 
All starfish no matter what type are scavenger, however large ones need ALOT of food and straving ones will go after weak or slow moving fish.
