what does a barred convict and a green severum make if they crossbreed? I have a freind who accidently crossed them and has 20 1" fry and wants to know what she has
seems my severum gets along pretty well with my cons. I was wondering if you could tell me if the con was the female and was the con striped or a pink?
I want to try this. As of yet my cons havent really paid much attention to the severum. I would like to set them up in another tank. It would be great to know what worked for you friend.
Thanks so much
Cylon
Ps
by the way I know what your friend has.
She has a batch of Killer Severums!
Cylon and fish breeder, "making" hybreds seems fun, and you can get some interesting looking fish, but PLEASE PLEASE do not take them to the lfs. If you/they inadvertantly sell them as one type or the other and they breed again, you risk poluting the pure gene pool. If you must fool arround with nature, keep one or two of the best fry and use the rest for feeders so they do not get released to the public. I would highly recomend against hybridising, but again if you must, do it in a highly contolled environment and do not allow the offspring to get into the public realm.
I agree with your advise.
I would not hand them out to anyone unless they knew what they were getting. I wouldn't mind a few for my self however. I got a hybreed Green terror half Equidor and half paru. The lfs didn't let me know this. I watched it grow and let him know later what I had. He knew he sold them that way and said he was lucky to get that batch. I feel I was as well. This GT has a lot more color than a common.
Anyhow I get your point.
The electric blue dempeys are nice looking but they are known hybreeds.
I'm sorry, but I don't see the attraction to creating hybrids. If you are going to spend all that time spawning fish, why not obtain some rare/difficult to breed species and spend your time working on that project. Keep notes and increase the knowledge pool of the hobby itself. If you have kept, bred, and studied the natural behavior of every cichlid out there, THEN I could see the alure of creating hybrids "just to see what happens", otherwise its just a waste of time that could be better spent benefiting the hobby.
I want those to.... But you don't undrestand. I want to get a 300gl tank and mix my wife with a pike and put her in the tank topless. We have talked about this a long time now and I have even brought this up in groups of friends. She says no cloning and her friends agree it would not be a nice thing to have a toppless clone in the living room.

PS
I have been trying to get my hands on one of those 3 eyed fish from the Simpsons.
lol
I'm glad to see some one with a sence of humor around.
I am not looking to cross breed for a hobby. These are jokes. However, Convicts breed like crazy and rather then having a batch of eggs go bad I would like to see if I can get one batch of eggs to work. I would love to keep a few for my self and I know people with tanks that would be intresed that havent had any luck breeding. I do not want to tant any gene pool. I would feel guily killing left over frys. I love my fish to much. If I am stuck with a bunch at the end I will just set up another tank till I find homes for them.
The onse I give out to my close friends... I will make a point not to Ever breed them or let them back to the population. Your thoughs on this topic have reinforced a point on this and I don't want to rune the convict or severum blood line. Most likely I wont even get this to work.
NatakuTseng your right,
I just re-read the artical I read a whil back.
As a result from the selection on mutation individuals, we have been able to fix and breed in a large commercial scale blue Nandopsis octofa
sciatum
Fish_Breeder,
Maybe, I could just get 1 or 2 of your friends fish
