Any recommendations on "breeding" green swordtails with another variety? I have two male green swordtails and I want to add some female swordtails to the tank. Is the choice of another variety just mix and match, or are there some recommended combinations? Are green swordtails more likely to breed with other greens, or are they equally likely to breed with other varieties ? (I suspect the latter, but am not sure.)

Any input is welcome. Thanks.

Good question, I think that as long as the two are closely enough related then they should breed. There might be some more deformities, though? But most strains of swordtails started off as cross-bred, like those gorgeous Pineapple swordtails. So go ahead and experiment! Just send pics of the babies!

almost all the swordtails available to the hobby are one species, so they can breed with no problem... if you have a fancy line you wouldn't want another color in with them cause that would muddle the colors...

there are many rivers in mexico and south in central america that swordtails are found and each river has a slightly different color variation but for the most part they are all like the common green or red. the way the hobbie has come up with other colors is they crossed different strains from different rivers and selected for the type they wanted... so crossbreed away and enjoy the results, that is how all the different colors of swordtails came to be
