I have some CRS being shipped to me, and after reading many horror stories about them being snacks for bettas, I decided to get a 2.5 for just shrimp. I'm just going to chronicle everything here, and your input is much appreciated! =)

Here are the specs so far;
2.5g tank (12" x 6" x 8")
Nano filter (either Hagen Elite Hush 5 or Red Sea Nano)...other suggestions?
Sand substrate
low-light heavily planted
no heater (but the tank will be in a room that is kept ~75)

I'm hoping that the CRS will breed for me, and then I'll be able to experiment with putting them into the betta tanks once I have a bunch.

Sounds like a sweet setup. Never had much interest in bettas so don't know how predatory they are. I suspect the adult CRS are going to be fine, but fear the babies would either be so reclusive you never see them, or else you never see them because they were invited as guests of honor to Lunch.

Don't want to use a sponge filter? Baby shrimp are very susceptible to being sucked into my Red Sea Nano, even with a Aquaclear foam cut into a prefilter.

I'm not too sure about my population, but maybe with about 40 RCS babies, I found almost a dozen in my filter within a week.

Finally set this sucker up. I went for the Red Sea Nano over a sponge filter because it takes less room in the tank. I'll cover the intake of the filter with a stocking before I put the CRS in. There's not too much in there now, I know. I still have to add plants. =) (The little clump of moss doesn't count)

Watson is a temporary inhabitant, as the otos clean his tank for him. It's a little hard to tell in this pic, but there's two levels of sand, with the higher level in the back.

Side tank shot showing the two levels. I found out today how hard it is to make rock walls. They kept falling out of place / not stacking properly.

The other side has a gentle slope. I may keep this hill-type thing when I plant it. It'd probably be fun for the CRS to climb over, plus it adds some dimension to the entire tank.

Rock walls are very hard to keep up lol. But I agree with the multi-level setup. Your shrimp will enjoy it thoroughly!

Looks awesome!
