Those are beautiful shrimps

Awesome job!

Thanks everyone!

Here's another pic. My marimo ball is so happy it's pearling! =) The shrimp absolutely love to groom it.

I suck at keeping RCS! =( Two of my RCS are currently dying...they starting spazzing out yesterday (kind off looked like they were jumping anytime they touched anything), and this morning, they're on their backs/sides flailing their legs.

I don't know what's causing it either. This happened to one of my shrimp earlier, but I blamed it on the mini-cycle I was going through that I didn't catch until 2 of my shrimp died. Since then, I've kept testing and doing WCs as necessary. I tested this morning, and it looks like my mini cycle is over.

Ammonia: 0 ppm
Nitrite: 0 ppm
Nitrate: <10 ppm

Any advice? I'd like to get some input before I get any more RCS...

Are there any traces of copper in your tank or maybe in your water? RCS aren't able to handle any bits of copper at all.

As far as cherries go.... they are little tanks compared to other shrimps.

Are you dosing any ferts to your tank? If so that maybe the cause. Shrimps can be sensitive to ferts especially excel. IF you are dosing, try dosing less then half of the recommended dose. if you are not dosing then it could be your cycle. How long was your tank cycling before you added the shrimps?

That happened to mine when I had them, but they had been going strong for 2 months.

+1, that's another good point.

I'm not dosing ferts, so no copper as far as I know.

The cycle was going a few days before I got my RCS. I put some established gravel and filter media in the tank. I figured with both of those, plus plants, it would probably silent cycle. I tested much later and found the ammonia spike.

I wonder if this is just a result of a delayed ammonia poisoning. If the plants were growing with ferts at an earlier time point, would they still be carrying copper? It seems a little unlikely to me, but I guess it could be the case.

It might have been the ammonia spike. Especially if you PH is above 6.5.... they higher thePH the deadlier the ammonia will be.

Hurray! I think I got myself a saddled girl. By coloration, I totally thought that she was a boy, but I'm pretty sure that's a saddle...

Out of the original 10 RCS and 2 amanos I had, there were four RCS that toughed it out. Now that everything is stable (thankfully), I'm probably going to get a few more to repopulate. =)
