Crushed coral or activated carbon, or both?

Sounds like old tank syndrome to me. It can happen fast to tanks with messy fish. I'm guessing you don't siphon the gravel because of the plants?

This is true. I don't. I should? I thought that would increase my nitrates too much.

About the piranhas and guppies. That was a joke. I've got 1 angel fish, 1 rainbow fish, 2 cory catfish, 12 silver tip tetras, and 3 h. rasporas. They don't really seem that messy(nitrates stay around 10 or 15 ppm. So, how does one get rid of the phosphates?

dolomite? You mean the movie? It's pretty good but i didn't know it could remove phosphates. Do I just dip the vhs in the tank, or should I crush it up with a hammer and put it in my canister filter?

So, I added CC and seachem's seagel. Which is, by the way and to my disappointment, nothing like a seagal or seagull. I was kinda hoping it would be. None-the-less. in the past 24 hours my ph has been going up and up. from below 6 to 6.8 in one day, oh, I'll be so lucky if no one dies.

I think I remember reading somewhere that it's easier on the fish to go to a more alkaline water than acidic. I've already taken half of the CC out in hopes of slowing the rise down . So, What's the real story? Anyone had this happen? Anyone lost a whole tank full of fish this way? Thanks

how heavily planted is your tank? I dose some phosphates for them, and nitrates as well. Go ahead and vacuum your gravel around the plants as much as possible. If you aren't having algae problems I would skip the phosphate remover.

lol....
No it's a mineral. It'll lower the pH in your tank and also establish a buffer.

Thanks everybody! looks like everyone's going to be fine. brown algae is disappearing after only a few days even though I've recently upped the lights. And I'm glad you said something, I canceled my order on amazon.com for the dolomite boxed set.
