I am going to soon be re-planting my 29g tank and was thinking of adding some vals, I found some curly ones that I absolutely love and was thinking of buying.
So, far the only thing I know is that Flourish Excel melts them, I don't use this brand though so, I am not worried about it. The last time I tried vals I was given some jungle val that fell apart and died in my tank before a week was up, so naturally I want this to not happen.

So my main question is what kind of lighting do I need for these guys? My second question is: is there anything else I need to know?
Thanks.

I have a tank full of Val. Early in year I had an algae problems and OD Excel and had a huge melt-down, but the Vals recovered. I now have a tank full again.

Vals grow by runners, so if you want them in just one certain area, cut the runners that go out of that are or just replant the baby Val somewhere else. If you let them grow long enough, they will hit the top of your tank water and droop back down, giving your tank a forest look which is what I am trying to achieve in my tank.

Mine runs endless in the tank. So if I trim it I can plant it?

I have corkscrew val in a tank that I use Flourish in daily. It melted a few leaves at first, but they came back after I lowered the dose a bit.Mine has been growing like crazy with runners everywhere.

I use excel too. My val has a light green stripe down the middle.

Your thread inspired me to trim it and make two new bundles.

Alright well it sounds like it shouldn't be too hard of a plant to keep. It must be the corkscrew val, haha LFS and their common names.
So, even if they get melted they grow back? Thats good to know.
Thanks everyone. I think I am going to have to make a trip to go and get some.
