Current Killed Wisteria?

I had two bunches of wisteria in my 10 gallon tank. They happened to be placed in the back corner of the tank near/under my HOB filter (Penguin 125). They both sort of disintegrated there. They never turned brown they just turned to mush.

There is another bunch in the tank but on the other end of it. This bunch seems to be doing fine. Could the current from the filter have killed the wisteria? I have two 10w compact flourescents for light. My levels are: Ammonia 0, Nitrite 0, Nitrates 5, Ph 7.2.

IMO - the current probably was a factor. But, I would look at how much light it got also. IME - needs decent light to grow well, since it was underneath the filter maybe it was out of the range of the direct light form the lights. Also, do you dose micros? If not, that is probably part of the problem too.

DIYMatt, I don't dose anything for the plants. The tank is fairly new and I didn't want to jump in with fertilizers. I guess I should be adding traces? What else?

I doubt light was really a problem but I guess it could be. It wasn't really shaded by anything. If it couldn't survive in that light then I should probably get rid of the remaining one.

Basically your plants need the macro nutrients Nitrogen, phosphorous, and Potassium. They also need quite a few traces. Check the sticky link at the top of the Aquatic Plant Forum about Fertilizers. It does a pretty good job of listing all the things you need and where you can getr them. Check it out and then post back if you have questions. Thanks!
