Hi,

I'm looking to build a custom hood that will incorporate Halides and tubes on a 260l bowfront.

My question is, how far about the water should the halides be placed? They are going to be 2 x 150w 10k with 2 x 38w actinic.

I would like to house both corals and anemones eventually.

Tank dimensions are:

47.67 inch wide
18.12 inch deep
24.43 inch high

Thanks for you help

Brian

To avoid overheating the water, hilides should be placed 8-12 inches away from water surface. Id go somewhere in between, around 10 inches. Id also get some fans to put in your canopy. One blowing in, the other blowing out.

Check out the new Icecap 4 (120mm) inch fans. Very quite, very powerful, and adjust according to heat. Speed up if things get hot, slow down when things cool down. Best on the market, but go for $50-$60 each.

Another question

Thanks for that, I'll look at the fans, but to be honest here in good old england it doesn't really get that warm so I struggle keeping the tank warm as apposed to cool ;)

Another question though, little off the point but... I've got a venturi skimmer (berlin XL) on the tank and was wondering if this + surface aggrevation will give enough Oxygen to the water, as I don't really want to run the powerheads with pumps attached and I don't have a sump? The pump running the skimmer is 3400lph.

Im no expert, but as long as you have 10-15 times the turnover in your tank, you should be fine. However, i doubt the Berlin would give you enough water movement on it's own.

Plus, to help avoid algae, it's good to have random flow, and no dead spots in the tank. Id suggest you get 1 or two powerheads.

What size is the tank (gallons), and do you have a sump? How many GPH does the pump for the return do??

I don't have a sump. The tank is 72 gallon and I have two 900lph powerheads in there as well as a fluval 303 canister that does about 800lph. I think I'm turning over about 18 times or something like that. I'm looking at adding another powerhead to the tank to help with movement.

how are you calculating your turn over? also i would suggest a sump!
