I had read awhile back about using cuttlestone in an aquarium for healthier snails and shrimp. I got some yesterday but thought I would ask for more opinions. Wouldn't want to put anything in there that would hurt my Threadfins or Angels or any of my other fish.

I was just going to break off a half dollar size piece and pin it down with a rock.

Is this ok to do?

its actually called a cuttleBONE. it is the only bone-like support structure found in a cuttlefish. it is used for pet birds to supply them with calcium and is perfectly fine to add to your tank for invertibrates to munch on if you have soft water. the shells and exoskeletons of all invertibrates are made of calcium, and they need lots of it for a healthy exoskeleton or shell. a cuttlebone is a great way to supply them with a source of calcium. it will have to be weighted down with a plant weight or a rock.

Yes, I meant cuttlebone. That is good to know. The little aquarium I have them in now consistently runs a ph closer to 6 so that is my concern also.
Thanks!

Assuming you are using tap water, what is the pH of your tap after you've let it sit out in a cup overnight? Would you test and post, please?

Cuttlebone is always a great idea, but if your pH is dropping, you should address that primarily. It could be an indication of a greater problem.
