Cycle not starting?!?!? other issues too!!

The test kits are reading the Chloramine in your tap water. The water conditioner splits the chlorine/ammonia bond and converts the released ammonia (NH3) into relatively non-toxic ammonium(NH4). Many test kits will give false readings with NH4 but it isn't a cause for concern regarding your tap water. The AC filters are fine to use but I'd go with one of the new Rena Smartfilters. It hangs on the back of the tank. It's a little more costly than the AC but well worth it. I'd also consider switching your water conditioner over to Prime...best bang for the buck.

It depends on the individual tank and bio load, and can vary widely from tank to tank, plus if the ammonia levels get too high, the cycle will stall. The best and easiest way to cycle a tank is to do a fishless cycle, either by adding pure ammonia or by dropping a raw shrimp in there and letting it decay. I suggest you browse around this site and take a look at some of the articles on the nitrogen cycle.:)

I agree and disagree Mama... the easiest cycle is a cycle seeded with establish media. Filter and gravel... and the shrimp really stink! lol

But definitely WAY overstocked.... bigger tank or take most back IMHO.
