Cycle (the product)

Ok, let's say this product IS good. Should I use it for life or just on the start up of my aquarium? What purpose does it serve once my tank is cycled and has been running for 6 months?

once your tank is established you should not need to replenish the bacteria

It can help to get rid of amonia or make it less toxic, BUT it shouldnt BE USED AS A SUBSTITUTE FOR WATERCHANGES. If you know you are going away and are not able to do waterchanges, thenI would add it.

Apart from that I would say it is not needed on a weekly basis

I got mine at the local Petco. I wonder how long it had been on the shelf? More interestngly I found one that could be over-nighted cold. I can't remember the name but it is one of the successors to BioSpira and it also made no difference. It was about $50 with shipping. If I remember right it was from Dr. Tim's new company and not the company that owns the rights to biospira.

Not sure on Dr. Tim's new company. But I want to add: All I seen was BioSpira posted all over the place. I went to my LFS and asked for established media (which they refused, but) they sold me some Tetra Safe Start (was kept very cold). I was a little reluctant at first, but I was assured it was the exact same culture as BioSpira. I am at day 5, since I started adding ammonia and last tested at:

Ammonia: 1 ppm
Nitrite: 1 ppm
Nitrate: 10 ppm

My heat is also lower than recommended until I get a stronger heater.

Excited that something is at least happening. I doubt this is what you were thinking of, but apparently another product or repackaging of BioSpira under the Tetra label.

I think that is what replaced Bio spira if I do remember correctly.
these products are really only for initial set up not continual use even though it says so. Once establised you wont need it.

lol:headshake2: He designed the first one

I understand that, but he left marineland and started his new company. BioSpira is now a saltwater bacteria supplement only, and tetra (who bought out marineland lab) replaced the freshwater version with Safestart.

I just purchased a bottle of Tetra Safe Start today. Had to ask for it. Not advertised that he sells it and he keeps it in the back in a fridge. I purchased Cycle the other day but after reading bad things, will not open/try it and will be returning it. I have found many sources who swear by the Safe Start (previously Bio Spira). Will update if it works out or doesn't.
