What would happen if you cycled a tank the cocktail shrimp way with live sand and live rock in there through the cycle?

The tanks stats are as follow.
72 gallon, 70lbs LR, 20lbs lace rock, and i think around 100lbs of LS. 20-30 gallon sump with skimmer and fuge with 10lbs LS. Salinity is 1.023. Temp 80. PH is 8.3, amonnia 0, trate 0, trite 0

the tank has been up and running for 4 days now

All live rock is cured and has growth on it coming back already.

Also, if i should cycle the tank the shrimp way. How many shrimp should I throw in. Should one or two shrimp go in the main and one in the sump?

If the LR is fully cured, you may not need a shrimp at all. What I would do is toss a shrimp in the main tank. If the ammonia doesn't go up over the course of a week, you're ready to stock.

Alright Ill give it a try and see what happens.

I just noticed on my rock some white'ish growth in some areas. Looks almost cacoon like, any idea what that might be? is there white algea? its on some of the live rock and a piece of the base rock.

Yeah I'll bet you'll be okay if the live rock is cured. That is exactly what I just did with my tank and ammonia and nitrite never even tested. I now have 5 fish all doing great. Keep in mind that anything can happen with these things so if you add fish I would add something relatively cheap. I have waited a while to add the more delicate fish like tangs because they are going to be way more susceptible if your water is the least bit unstable.

Thats kinda what i figured... I guess we will see how things shape up.

After putting a green star polyp in the tank how long should it take to open back up?

Depends. I just moved a GSP from one tank to another, and it opened within hours. On the other hand, the same specimen took several days to open after being shipped to me. With more handling and larger changes in parameters, opening up will take more time.

I wouldn't worry if it's closed for less than a week. It will probably open and start taking over your tank any day :D
