Cycle?????

the problem with cycle - learned this the hard way (do a search and you'll get my post from last week)- cycle only has the ability to convert amonia to nitites it has nothing to finish the job and turn nitrites into nitrates. Plus the shelf life is unpredictable and apparently even the brand new stuff can be completely deviod of the bacteria-

I used it- before i knew- i didn't get amonia spikes but i lost one sword tail to the nitrite concentration before i realised what was happening and now i'm just doing a good old fashioned really slow cycle on an overstocked tank.

if the biofilter were mature i'd be fine- instead i do a 20% water change every night and who knows how long i'll be doing this- my filter has a lot of catching up to do.

if you haven't added fish yet do a fishless cycle it's worth it. otherwise stop adding now and take it really slow.

I find you get far healthier fish from a standard cycle, no chemicals just run the tank for a week or 2 with nothing in it bar the decor and a pump/heater etc. once done then add fish.

All this will do is remove chlorine (not chloramine) from the tank. This does nothing to start the biological (nitrogen) cycle that this product ports to doing instantly.

Read up on the fishless cycle. I cycle all my tanks that way. It is really nice to throw in a full fishload, get all diseases knocked out in one shot and not have to worry about water conditions.

To echo what LesbianChap said, you have to have ammonia to start the cycle or no dice. You will also be left with chloramines, worse than chlorine.

Btw, Bio Spira isn't a chemical. It's a package of living bacteria, which is why it's refridgerated.
