cycling a new tank with established tank media

The difference between a 29 and a 30 in the US is about 6 inches of length. The 29 is the length of a 20 long at 30 inches while the 30 is a full 3 feet. The water surface area is very different.

Yhbae is correct wanted longer foot print.
I broke down and finally bought a 30 gallon long from a LFS.
As soon as the temp gets up to 78 I am transferring 2 fish from my little girls tank and some media and gravel. It works out nice, mama guppy is pregant so she can have one tank all to herself while daddy and pal help me out.
How long should I wait to put plants in? I don't want to interfer with the cycle process.

hmm...I thought I had a 29gallon tank, but it measures 36 inches long so I guess it is a 30 gallon, cool. I did get a 50 gallon tank, complete with stand and light hood for free on craigslist. Probably won't happen again, but it was an awesome find!

the extra height of the 29 is why I use that tank for the pairs of angels I have.

you can compensate a bit in the surface volume by getting more turn over in flow
each tank has it's benefits.

When it comes to gas exchange, yes, but overall MOST fish benefit from more horizontal space than vertical space...angels are one exception ;)

The footprint of the 29 and the 30 long is a big difference. I understand why you just broke down and purchased from the LFS. Good luck with the new tank. At least now you have the tank you really want.
