some times it takes time to establis the nitrite eating bacteria, how long has it been since you first got an ammonia reading?
one of my tanks had a hard time getting these 2-3 weeks before a reading showed up.

It did take a few weeks before the ammonia showed up. So according to my readings, it was probably week 3 for ammonia and then it's been 6-7 weeks with only ammonia and no nitrite...that is according to my test kit which I'm learning may or may not be giving false readings. I'm using a Red Sea Fresh Lab kit.

If you use Aquarium Pharmaceuticals freshwater master test kit you will have more accurate test results. For freshwater this is the best test kit out there.
