Cycling my 75g - Nitrite problems!

In my experience, the Nitrites have always taken the longest to drop off during cycling...

Keep up the water changes and you should probably be fine. Cichlids can be tough, but you have to help them along since you put them in this situation.

You are doing the right thing by asking questions and seeking answers. Many fishkeepers think fish are decorations rather then pets.

I really care for the fish. I knew what could happen, but sinced I moved to this VERY rural area, I cannot get to town easily.
I think it is about 120 mile round trip for me. I never clocked it.
I thought with a high volume of water the fish would have a chance.

They are showing no signs of stress at this point, so maybe I'll be OK.

You should do fine as long as you keep up on the water changes and keep testing the water everyday. Just do not add anymore fish until you know that you are completely cycled and then add them real slow so the bioload can catch up. Don't beat yourself up for doing what you did. As long as you keep on top of things you will do fine. Everyone makes mistakes or decisions that they regret later on. Just learn from your mistakes. I am not saying that you have made a mistake, I am just saying in the future keep in mind everything is not going to always go perfect etc... As long as you have your fish as top priority you will do fine.

As I look back, it would have cost me a bundle in gas going back and forth to town, but in the long run, I would have been "nicer" to my fish.

Those fish set me back about 80 dollars....It wouldn't have cost me that in gas if I just waited for the cycle to finish!

Anyway, I will do whatever it takes. Thank God they are not stressing as far as I can see.

120 miles... :eek: .... may be you would be better off buying online(imo)
, anyways if you can get your hands on some bio-spira you can add that to your tank it would help you out alot but since its a long trip i would take a small cooler with ice in it just to keep the bio-spira cold. if not just keep up with the water changes. I was on the same boat you where in cycling wise intill I found this site. Its a great place to learn about this fantastic hobby....Good Luck buddy and welcome to AC.... :thm:
 
the other way to keep the gas down if you get MTS (multi-tank syndrome) is to do fishless cycle, if you can find the ammonia.

Well at least you are not overstocked and have to take some fish back! :rolleyes:

That was my initial problem.
No unscented ammonia around here!!!

I'll be OK..The fish will be OK...

I just have to do the water changes as ya'll said!!!!

Yeah, if you keep up with the water changes things should even out soon enough. Don't forget to put water conditioner (Prime, etc.) in with the new water. Good luck and welcome! :)

I checked again this morning after yesterdays water change and the nitrites are creeping down!

Under .25 now...
