Cycling Questions

My tank currently has 48 gallons in it. With 30 pounds of base rock. This afternoon I purchased some uncooked prawns witch are currently in the freezer. I have a super skimmer 125 and I want to begin cycling on the weekend. I want to know how much live rock I should get and How much prwan I should add for the propper amonia? I know the live rock should be anywhere from 15-20 pounds so I am more curious abou the prawn thing.

are u making a reef or just fish? also skimmer scum works better than prawns but if u use prawns 3 or 4 should be fine...well how large are the prawns

in a 48gal tank, 1 medium to large prawn will create more than enough ammonia to start off the cycle..

EEEk! Two tatally different answers! It's all fish and the prawns are the size of a grown man's thumb.

on cycling, it does not matter if its a reef or a fish only with live rock. The process is exactly the same. That size of shrimp will be enough to get the ammonia produced which will kick start the cycle process...Wrap it up is some tights ( or pantyhose if your from outside of UK )...just dont use fishnets........ha ha ha ha ha...sorry...a little humour there.....

not overly, what you are trying to achieve is to start the generation of ammonia which starts the nitrogen cycle...1 good sized carcass is fine..
