Cycling with Gulf View Deco Rock

Doubtful, Gulf View rock is apparently shipped VERY well and people report little die off occurs... However, the theory is, when you introduce that rock, it should be sufficient to "instantly cycle" your tank... Meaning, it can process the ammonia from any die off on itself, as well as a bioload you add to it... Myself, I don't consider that a "cycled" tank, but I'm probably arguing over terminology rather than the chemical facts of what is going on... Same concept of taking a biowheel from one tank and using it on another... No, it isn't cycled, but yes, it can handle a bioload...

Confused yet? hehehe

Oh big brains, paging the big brains...........!

Actually, I got a decent (~5 ppm) ammonia spike off of 30 lbs of GV LR, but it's hit or miss depending on how well the rock was packaged and what types of critters were on the rock. (I had a few rocks covered in sponges, and I'm sure this played a big part in the ammonia spike).

To be safe, always run a fishless cycle. Check the SW archives for the thread called 'FishWhisperer's fishless cycling method' for a detailed description.

There is the big brain I was hoping for =)

GV CAN give you a nice spike, but I've heard more on the end of it being a minor thing than I have on it being a major one... The rock I got from FFE (while a shipping problem and probably not typical of FFE's LR) was along the lines of about 400ppm hehehe so I'd consider 5ppm to be a negligable spike, relatively speaking =)
