No war, the thing about this hobby is that there is more than one way to approach it. Additionally there is so little money for research for it that much of the research has come from hobbyists. That means some of the advice out there is good, some not as good, and some downright horrid. Our job as marine tank keepers is to research any advice we get, ask more questions based on what you find and then make an informed decision even if it is to do more research.
Personally, if I were setting up a new tank now I'd not hesitate to use good cured rock and start the cycle with pure ammonia.
