WHAT DO YOU NEED TO DO TO MAKE SURE YOUR TANK HAS CYCLED. I HAVE A 55 GALLON FRESHWATER TANK.

Over a period of a few weeks you need to monitor the concentration ammonia/ammonium and nitrite compounds. There will be a spike of ammonia first, and as it recedes, there will be a spike of nitrites.
Make sure you don't add too many fish at once, and do frequent water changes.
Also, check out the sticky on fishless cycling. It may come in handy in the future.
