Dachshunds

I had relatives as well as neighbors that had them and I learned early on to never turn your back to one. As far as I knew, being a stranger in their territory represented more of a major threat than to say they were vicious dogs. From what I saw of them they seemed to be ok for families with older kids.

My Aunt had 5 of them at once, Most of the males were pretty high strung, one was almost mean, she would lock it up whenever people (like me) visited. I think it depends on the individual dog, but to my knowledge none of them were lap dogs, nor do I ever remember ever even being able to pet one of them. I don't want to discourage you, but If you were seriously considering getting one, I would look for an independent breeder in your area, and check out the temperament of their dogs, before just jumping in and getting one...

Awwww, how cute.

If you plan on getting a dachshund, find yourself a reputable, responsible breeder that you can call and ask question. A true responsible and reputable breeder, will answer all your questions and help you with any problems you may have. They are prone to back problems and slip discs and paralysis, so make sure you don't let them become overweight. Don't let them jump off of furniture as this can bring about there back problems. Through socialization and proper training, you will have a good dog. Start training early and be patient, consistent and positive. Positive reinforcement during training will go far in training your dog. You have the option of choosing either the toy or miniature dachshund and either a long, short or wirehair one. Each one has a different personality so make sure you do your homework. Research, ask questions and be sure that this is the breed of dog you want. Good Luck.
