Daily Log of Constructing a Tropical Fish Pond

Looks pretty sweet! might've been interesting to make the whole thing elevated and put a sneeze guard around the perimeter, so you could pull up a bar stool and eat/drink from the top ledge like a bar. ;)

Clouds and gold

Well I put some fish in the pond today! I put 4 gold barbs and 3 white clouds in the pond. I also got one bunch of anachirs plants. I took an old sour cream container and put some soil and gravel in it and stuck the plants in. We will see how good it does. Right now the pond is pretty barren. There is the anachris and two fake plastic plants for cover. The white clouds dissapear into the pond but the gold barbs really stand out and you can see them easily. The white coulds are kinda just swimming around slowly. The barbs were racing up and down the pond. 8 foot sprints are really long compared to the 10 gallon aquarium they were in! I think they are in heaven. I hope they don't get sunburned tomorrow.

The temps in my pond have been pretty consistent for the last couple of days. Around 70 at 5pm andabout 63 in the morning. I don't think that this pond will ever reach tropical temperatures so I have adjusted my stocking plan for the pond. It seems that Barbs and Livebearers are really suited for this tank. There are many Barbs that do fine in cooler water and most livebearers can also take cooler temps. I am going to try some paradise fish because they can take temps all the way down to around 60F. I might throw in some warmer water species for July and August when it is the hottest here in the bay area.

On a positive note, all the fish are doing really well. They are swimming all over and they don't seem to mind the cooler morning temps. They all feed in the morning and at night. It is amazing to see how "aquarium fish" act in ponds. White clouds wont get farther than 6 inches apart. They school really tight. They behave like tiny trout. The gold barbs also keep together. They are really fast and love to do a sprint and stop pattern. They zoom really fast and then they all just stop. Kinda weird.... The white clouds are harder to see, but the white tips on the fins really stand out. The gold barbs are a great choice for the pond. They are very easy to see.

Toilet bowl??? That is a pretty crazy idea!!!! Thanks for all the comments everyone!

That wasnt my idea; I was shooting it down ;) LOL

If you want a fountain, I think something like a spitting frog or possibly a turtle would look a lot nicer.

Sounds good, but need some pics of those fish in their new home!

I had a thought for your waterfall, I was at my parents, and saw that they have a old Jack Daniels 1/2 barrel that my mom is using for some flowers. My dad had to drill a hole in the bottom so that the water would drain, so I think that it can hold water. They got it at a local garden store around Chicago, So I am not sure where you would find something like that, but just an Idea.

Keep up the great work
