Daily log of my new 55 gallon South American Tank.

i went crazy and bought alot of oto's. i just love how active they are and they keep my tank clean.

your setup looks awesome, you did a great job!

update time!!!!

OK since last time here are my new updates:

pvc overflow constructed
refugium lighting completed
stand finally finished

here is the cost tally

last post $183

new
pvc parts $26
1/4" plywood $9
pvc cement and primer $4
schultz aquatic soil $21 (30lbs)

new total cost
$243!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

here is what everything is for:

pvc is for the custom overflow which i attached pics. it works by siphon. it then will go to the fuge. the in tank overflow parts are 1" and the siphon break drain is made out of 1 1/4" pvc. for more info on this check out the thread on reef central. http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=503664 it totally explains it. I will try to get better pictures

i decided on using schultz aquatic soil instead of flourite substrate. it is the same fired in a kiln clay stuff but way cheaper. I got 30 pounds for the price of 15 pounds of flourite!! I will get another 10 or 20lbs and that should give me a good substate for plant growth!!

the 1/4" plywood was for the sides and back of the stand to seal off the stand from the outside. here are some pics hope you enjoy!!!

I plan on painting the pvc black, but i need to figure out what i can safely paint it with so it doenst poison my fish...any suggestions????????????

I'm not sure what kind of paint is used for the ornaments you buy.

I find a link here http://www.csd.net/~cgadd/aqua/46g_construct.htm that might help though.

I notice you used the same pvc primer I used on my CO2 reactor. Man that stuff got right to my head in about 3 seconds :)

thanks for the info, it helped out!!!

yeah after the first cemented joint, i was flying methy-ethyl ketone high!!!!!!!!!!!

total cost for tank to date: $417.00

it is amazing the cost of an aquarium. This has been a thrifty project, i have basically done everything myself and it is still very expensive. I have included all the costs associated with the aquarium so far. When you keep track of everything bought for the aquarium it is mind boggling. Granted most of the costs are associated with the fuge and piping. I had to build the stand to accomodate the fuge and that increased costs even further. With out the fuge we would be at about $260 and the aquarium would be full of fish by now. Oh well hopefully it is worth it in the long run. On a positive side i could switch over to a reef tank very easily with this setup!!!!

My next big project is going to be the fuge. I already have it all planned out I just have to get the silicone and then i can get rolling. Once that is done I will be starting it up. Once this gets rolling i will be posting more pics!!!!!

Can't wait to see them LB....have you made up your mind what you'll be stocking the tank with ?

i had a stocking plan in an earlier post but here is what i am thinking now:

20 cardinals
4 rams
5 pencil fish (beckfordi???)
5 cories (albino)
some ottos for algae control
and a big maybe because it would break the whole amazon thing: 4 pearl gouramis they would look absolutly stunning in the tank. we will see

i plan on monitoring my nitrates, if they are high with all the fish besides the pearls, then no i will not get them. however if my fuge takes off and works then i might add the pearls. i also plan on adding another female ram because right now i have 3 males and 1 female. the one pair breeds often but the eggs never last in the tank. right now i have 4 rams and 11 cards in my 15 gallon. these will be the first into the new tank.
