yes, if you want to read up on the overflow thing search reefcentral.com and do a search for DIY $15 overflow. if you are not a member just go to DIY section and start looking!!!!!! that is where I found it

I'm looking into making a custom 2 or 3 tier stand for a possibly 60G, 20L, and a couple of 10G's.
Looking at your budget (just the parts for the stand), I was worried that it'll easily break $200.
Wal*Mart has a "cheap" 55G stand for $89 that I was eyeing out that would work - 48" x 16" footprint; I might just go that route and end up saving money in the long run. :)

Nice job on the project!
I wish I could go with a fuge like yours, but my current apt just cannot handle a set-up like that. :(

no problem, hopefully we can all learn from my $600 experiment!!! if I added up what the stand cost plus what my theoretical hourly wage is (from my job) times the endless hours spent making the thing I would have bought a stand from wally-world also. On the plus side my stand could support most cars on the road today, I went a little over the top building it. I would honestly say that you could make one for $100 and it would still be stronger than most store bought stands. If you do make your own stand you get the added thrill of filling up the tank for the first time and wondering if it is either going to: A) Shatter the aquarium from improper load bearing or B) The stand cracks in half and you give your downstairs neighbor a free shower. Unless you want to dedicate some major time into design and construction I suggest buy one.

Emg, I admit I have been slacking lately. The tank is not that good looking because right now I am tinkering with macro and micro ferts to see the true capacity of the refugium. The capacity of the vegatative filter has a truely amazing. I will drop 2 pinches of KNO3, one small pinch of KPO4 and some micro PMDD and the next day there is no trace of any nitrates!

There is some algae in the tank.... ok there is a bunch. I will take some pics next week.
 
LOL LB...I was wondering if something like that was the probable cause for no pics at this time..lol...totally understandable !

That's ok LB, I'd rather wait and see a great looking tank than catch you in the middle of a cycle/setup issue... ;)

Can't wait to see it all set up ! :dance:

I am pleased to announce that all 36 of my cardinal tetras in my 55 gallon are tank raised specimens from florida. My first batch I got 1 yr ago and I didn't read the tag close enough but they were tank breed. Went back today and got 15 more. Talked to the lady that runs Wet Thumb Aquatics (www.wetthumbaquatics.com) and she only buys tank raised cardinals. They cost a whopping 1.25 a piece. I always wondered why my cards did so well in ph 7.0- 7.5 and total hardness of 9. Maybe it is because they are tank raised. They have just as nice of color, and I have never noticed any differences. They school tightly but are not timid at all.

Yes I am back on track with this tank. now I have 36 cardinal tetras, 4 rams, 4 pencil fish and one cory. These cards are awsome because they are not as picky about the water parameters. No more fish will go into this tank. I need to get going on the plants soon. I can just picture the cardinal school going through a heavily planted tank. The weather has warmed up and i am no longer worried about mail transport. I will take some pics tomorrow and post them.

Well boys and girls, I moved to cali and the tank is empty. I almost turned it into a Reef tank, but I would have to sell my truck because it is too RICH!!!!

I am thinking about re-introducing plants to the fuge and growing harder to keep fish. Not really sure about what kind of fish or biotype. Maybe Discus!!! Not really sure. I had rainbows before I moved and they were sweet.......

I wonder who is still here from the orginal posting????????
