Daily log of my new 55 gallon South American Tank.

Ok I was thinking about going with either discus or maybe south american tank or a gourami tank (pearls of course). Or maybe I should go with a weird "odd ball" fish.......I suck at plants so I have given up on that idea for this aquarium......Any ideas would be great! I can't decide!

IKEA=Fish lights

I was at ikea buying a bookshelf and I ran into these cool little halogen lamps that are designed to hang from the ceiling. I bought two for the 55 gallon. They are 35 watts each. Has anyone ever used halogen lights for aquariums? They make the cool sparkle lines like metal halides on reef tanks. The color from these halogens seem pretty white...

Do you think the fish colors will "pop" with these lights? Does anyone have experience with these lights?

wow i just sat here and read this whole 112 replies and stuff what a journey for u. I dont have any thing to do with the lights. I just had to say what a learnig experience. I am constantly doing water changes, what a pain and my water is still cloudy, but my fish seem fine. NO DEATHS. i can do a 50% one and still get a high reading in the trates and trites i dont know what to do. Just wanted to say i read it and thank u

Just read the whole lot too, hope you've still got your fiance with the move to Cali.

So, you'd like fish without plants. You could do bare bottom breeder for discus, or a few rocks with central american cichlids or african's (peacocks look amazing imo). Even a greek/roman theme with man made decorations and pearl gourami's swimming around.

Just some thoughts...

Thanks for the kind words.....You should test your tap water to make sure that the trates and trites aren't coming from there. Also if it is a new tank, give it time and let it cycle. most say to feed light and let it run its course!

She is now my wife!!!! It is funny how old this thread is!

I am now leaning towards bosmani rainbows......But I have been looking at some of the medium sized cichlids......right now I am constructing my tropical fish pond so I am kinda distracted...

Awesome tank-building skills and creativity! :)
I didn't read all the posts since its almost 2am already, but I skimmed through every page and read a few little details. Amazing!
Congratulations on your marriage, and good luck on rebuilding your tank! Hope it goes well... oh, and do post about it. 'Twas trully amazing!

Thanks for the motivation, right now I am slacking. I am focusing on building my outdoor tropical fish pond. After that is done, I am going to go full bore on the tank. I want to try some even weirder ideas this time around, so it should be interesting.

I bought some cheap light sockets (4) for the fuge. I am going to use 4 screw in compact flouscents for lighting the fuge. I also bought the 14/2 wire. I am going to wire these in myself....should be interesting......More to come later. My lighting setup for the fuge will be a whopping $23, bulbs included.
wire $5
sockets $10
bulbs $6
plug $2

yay! i was hoping this thread would pick up again...
i come back and re-read it every time i'm starting a new tank - good reading! tough to put down! lol. I'm starting my first large tank in May (i've never had over 20 gallons and now i'm getting a 60! i haven't really started anything for it except researching renters insurance in case i do something...i don't know...typical for me?)
anyway, keep it up!
~ an adoring fan
