Hello everyone! Some of you may remember me (doubtful)
but I used to activly be on this site day and night....well in around march I decided that I really wanted a bigger tank...and my parents said NO numerous times....so I didnt want the tanks anymore.

Since then, my 4 cories have died....and the 4 goldfish are back in the 10gal until I buy a bigger tank, in a week or so.

Don't worry, I am doing 25% changes 2x every day, and the filter they currently have is for a 50+gal so its super powered for the tank.

After I put them in their new larger tank, (not sure of the size of the tank yet, most likely 50g+)
I am planning on putting my still alive and kicking betta malaria (in the pic) in the 10 gal again, but I'm not sure what I want in there with him....

I was thinking a couple cories and maybe something else, but I'm not sure, what do you think?

Also, I know this is a super packed post, but I need to ask, this summer has been in the 80's-90's like everyday....tooo hot for goldfish...so I've been putting 3 trays of icecubes in the tank a day....is that ok? I cant currently afford to buy a chiller or move the tank. and No, Its not in direct sunlight, and I do leave the lights off to reduce more heat. HELP!

thanks so much!

thanks so much for the help...I remember you too! I'll try the fans and stuff for the goldies :D

My parents are like that sometimes. They say I can only have them in my room. They said they may let me help them set up the marine tank they want, someday, though.

yeah...my parents have at least let me keep the tanks in the living room....the cooler part of the house, it gets up to 84* during the day in the tank.

I have a small shoal (10 or so) of neon tetras with my pink betta. Betta gets feisty if they try to top feed, but otherwise, he ignores them.

Putting ice cubes in your tank is fine but condition the water before you freeze it or put the ice cubes in ziplocks. And don't drop the temp to fast.
I'm stocking a 15g community tank right now. I've done research and asked around and I'm planning on a betta with some cories and platys, very peaceful. Stay away from nippy fish for obvious reasons and very active fish can disturb your betta.

Oh, and I sympathize with your parent issues. I remember what that was like!
Your parents only have your best interests at heart. Maybe if you sit down with them and explain in a mature intelligent manner, why you want a larger tank and what you plan to do and the learning experience and responsibility you'll get out of it (they love that stuff!).

Good luck!

Spouces can get in the way of the hobby too...lol.....but sometimes that can be a good thing because if I had my way I'd have tanks on every free spot of wall in the house...but then I wouldnt' have time to practice my violin or do much of anything else but clean tanks..lol..

So, it is good to have someone who can oversee the obsession so it doesn't get too out of hand....lol...

Oh BTW, my dear spouce has been very patient but he did say no to a large tank under the flatscreen tv, when we get one..... :(
But...I have time to work on him there... :girl:

thanks for the replies everyone!

in my case, we have tons of space in the basement of our house (fully furnished, heated, etc) and I would love to put a 50g tank down here out of the way of everything, I picked the spot etc...but my parents don't think that goldfish will need that much water, and I have tried to convince them otherwise, but especially since I took a break from the hobby, they were discouraged that I would stay responsible to the fish tanks and care for them as I should. Which, I would since these are living beings we are dealing with and I absolutly would take the best care of any living creature I could.

I have been sticking to putting trays of cubes in the tank aswell as the water changes, but in around 20-30 minutes the tank is back up to 80*. I have checked around the house near the tank for anything that could be heating the tank, and theres nothing that I can see, even when the a/c is on, (Not central air) the tank remains 80*, so I am guessing that its the 100* weather we are having outside rhat is doing this to the tank. right now I have a very limited budget (I'm 13, no job, and my parents have to pay for my horse aswell so we dont have a lot of extra $$ to spare) so I am going to ask one more series of questions:

1. Would a 50g be enough for 4 goldfish?
2. If so, how much would it cost to buy everything for the tank, including a stand(doesnt have to be a good one) and a filter?

Thanks so much for all the help you've already given me!

I guess I'm lucky... When I started, all I wanted was a 5gal tank with a betta. My husband thought we should get a bigger tank so we got a 20 which now houses 6 cory cats, 3 oto cats, and a pair of dwarf gouramies (male and female). I still never got my betta so.....My husband thought I should get another tank so I could have the betta that I had wanted from the beginning. So I got a 15gal which houses a couple platies right now but will have cories, otos and a betta when I'm done stocking. However, my husband is taken with sharks and other larger fish so he wants to get rid of our desktop computer, get a laptop and put a 100gal tank on the computer desk. I think I created a monster! And all I wanted was one little betta...We are really enjoying this hobby (although I do all the work ;) )
