It's ok, I confuse my students too.
First off, "not looking right" isn't grounds to kill a fish. If you aren't sure if anything is wrong, ask first. Your time and money aside, you unnecessarily killed a couple living things here when a little patience and the foresight to ask would have made all the difference.
You will find that most fish change color as a response to stress, changing light conditions (day vs night colors) or as a response to other fish (mating or aggression shows). Your damsels were probably just stressed about the transition to the new tank. Have some patience...most of us wouldn't last long if we all got flushed down the toilet every time we were having a stressful day.
