Hey,
I figured I'd post an image of one of my ram juvies. Named after Danger Doll's description - in another post - this ram is neither a gold one nor an albino one. Notice there is no black splotch but the dorsal fins are still dark, there is still a dark slash through the red eye and it's ventral fins are dark. The pic isn't as good as I'd wish, but it took me 45 times to get this one! You can't see it well, but the fins are all tinged in red. This is a male, and as the juvies are coloring up I have about 10 of them...

P.S. Any other ram breeders have this experience? I wasn't breeding golds and blues, as far as I know they were regular blue rams...

Could it be that you have a F2 hybrid in the original pair that is half blue half gold and this is the result? Otherwise I would just figure it is some sort of recessive genetic trait.

Thats exactly what it is i have had a fish in the past that looked exactly like that and it was a hybrid of a bolivian blue and a gold

No, just regular Blues. The male came right from the lfs, and the female was one that I raised from eggs from other ordinary lfs rams...

Now the male - the father - doesn't have strong coloring. He does show lots of red in his fins though. The female has very strong typical ram coloring and is very spikey and dark. I'm really hoping that this new colored fish won't dull out over time. I have about 10 of them - none female. As they are pairing up, I think I'll let a couple of them spawn even though they are brother/sister and see what their offspring look like... Or, I might have to go buy a gold ram female and see what happens if I can pair one of them to her.

Sounds like more tanks doesn't it?! Geesh, this has got to stop!

Oh, frems you said

Unless someone can say for certain that they have watched a Bolivian and a Blue ram mate and rear fry, or even produce fertilized eggs, I won't believe this. I have tanks where both are together, and they don't hang together at all. I have a feeling that this idea is an internet rumour, not based in fact. There are lots of colors found in the blue rams, but just because they loose the gold coloring or the blue coloring doesn't mean they have cross bred with the Bolivians... If anyone KNOWS otherwise, let them come forth...

the batch of rams I got at auction have varying amounts of black on them, so I'd think it was very possible to get stripeless with the same spawn. I wondered if it were possible to have golds and blues from the same spawn-if there was one parent with gold genes if some would be blue and some gold.

Well I might find out soon. One of the whites has paired up and it looks like they have chosen an anubias leaf. Don't you think it is worth a leaf to pull the eggs and see what comes of it?

Yep - but I'm going to wait with this batch thats for sure. Also my lfs - it is a very good one - still has nitrates over 40. That translates to no real growth once I sell the fish to them. This time I am going to ask more money and wait to sell them until they are all grown up - well, at least 1.5 inches+.
