My zebra danio has always been active, and constantly swimming around for the last year and a half Ive had him. I have a 5 gallon tank - also in the tank is 1 cory. They have always gotten along - if anything, my danio would chase the cory. My ammonia and nitrite levels are 0, pH is 7.0. My cory seems perfectly healthy. ALl my danio does is float in the corner of the tank under the filter. It's almost as if he's scared or something. ANy idea what is wrong with him??? Thanks!

do a visual inspection for anything out of the usual on their body. if it is still eating as it does, there might not be a problem. only concern i see is a danio and cory in a 5G. by no means is it overstocked, but the two species are shoaling fish, and would prefer more of their own as company.

my suggestion would be to purchase a 20G (or larger tank) to house more danios and more corys. you'll see a difference in their activity level and health.

Ditto on iceubez189's post.

You didnt list your nitrate readings, are you performing regular maintenance on this tank?

To look further into it, have you changed anything in or around the tank?

Thanks for your response. i only have room for the 5 gallon tank. My danio's backside maybe a little droopy, but not sure if i am looking into it too much. he eats a little bit, but he always used to be all over the top of the tank at feeding time, eating as much as possible. now he stays towards the bottom of the tank, and when he swims it does look like he is dragging his back along for the ride if you know what I mean. I keep regular care of the tank and have had no changes over the past few months that would influence his behavior in such a drastic way.

I read somewhere to add garlic into the tank? Is this true and how do I do this? Thanks so much--

It could be age - my older danios got a bit of an arch/bend in their back as they aged. Danios will live anywhere from 1 to 5 years in my experience. In excellent water conditions, their ultimate age will probably come down to genetics and whether the fish comes from inbred stock.

If you can't see anything physically wrong, and the fish is eating, I'd call it age. Being alone may be contributing to age stress. Danios are schooling fish and will simply wane and waste away if not kept in proper numbers.

:( He really doesnt seem to be eating much either, as he is constantly down in the corner of the tank.

It just seems weird to me to have such a drastic change in behavior overnight. He went from a seeming happy fish, active and eating and ruling the tank - to a drooping, struggling to swim, not eating much, always treading water in the corner fish.

I read somewhere about garlic maybe helping this condition, so I attempted to put some garlic oil onto their flakes at feeding time. Has anyone ever used garlic before or heard of this?

Thanks for all your responses--

The garlic is an appetite stimulant. Putting it on the food should be fine, I just wouldn't dump it directly into the tank.

This topic was created a year ago. I'd suggest making your own topic so you can get enough responses than an old thread, Stussy.:)
