Danio thinks it's a salmon

rtr i wanna know about your river tank!...

You guys get all the fun fishes my clownloach wont even try to escape when i took the lid off to cool the water from this summer heat.

I second RTR telling how his river tank is set up and what runs it.

are ur new zebra danios short finned or longfinned, u should get both and inter breed them, they make hybirds, i wanna make a hybrid of a longfinned and a lepoard danios

Commercial 'River Tank' = brand name, was independent originally, several years ago purchased by Perfecto. Built into standard tanks by fiberglass compoments siliconed (watertight) into standard glass tanks. Mine has "two rapids" and one waterfall. One large bog pocket, one small, both near the average water level, one pocketed shelf the width of the tank. The lower planting pockets get water from the "river", are planted with Crotons, baby's tears and Java Moss. Upper pocket has a drip system branched from the return water line (not stock, my mod/DIY), planted with Cryptanthus, baby's tears, Java Moss, and variegated dwarf creeping fig (attaches to side glasses and fiberglass back wall). Java Moss on the fiberglass background below the upper pocket (gets drips from the upper pocket) and the exposed portion of the water return line from the pump (ditto drips). Trying to get emersed Java Fern going again on the backing also. The two river pockets (sumbersed) have Cryptocoryne wendtii green in the deeper one shaded by the larger Croton and Zephrantes (aka "dwarf onion" - which it is not) in the brighter shallower pocket. Circulation is by a MaxiJet 1000 with a FilterMaxIII prefilter. Lighting is by 2 each 18" and 2 each 24" Tritons, 12 hrs per day. Stocked w/standard Zebra Danios (why would I want the freaks* with less salmon-like abilities?) and Olive Nerite snails (which like the waterfalls also).

This is the tank listed as LR30 in my tank specs.

*Can you tell that I do not care for the selected "long-finned" varieties of just about anything?

ah, I have seen those. I thought maybe you had made your own... I suppose I need to temper my expectations of the things you have or do ;) lol

LOL! I have DIY'd river and rapids tanks in the past. I promise you, the commercial units look and work better than my DIY. I saw the River Tanks at a wholesale pet show the year they were intoduced, and met the guy who developed them. My 30XH was the first around here - the LFS set one for themselves, and got one for me. I ran a 40-long also for several years, but just the original currently.

The tank was in bad shape - neglected - and I'm just bring it back currently. Once it is up to standard levels, I'll do pics and write it up. The Crotons overgrow, and this time I had to really whack the original one way back, it is definitely not photo-ready yet.

Apologies for the thread hijack... :OT:

i just bought 8 zebra danios yesterday for my 20 gallon, what does the longfinned look like?

strips are just like the shortfinned, but the fins are almost as long as a bettas, shortfinned have normal looking finns, long finned danios, when they grow to adult size have fins so long that they wave with the current, theyre very bueitful and cost more. My hybrid is actually about to die...but a hybrid is a cross between the two. Just imagine tyhe finns a bit longer but not as long as the shortfinned
