Im a little confused with these guys. Everything I have read as said they are top or top - middle dwelling fish. It also said they were fast. The fast bit is right but the top to middle dwelling part isnt. My lot seem to swim all over the tank which would be fine apart from the fact I have added them in with a yabby ( Cherax Destructor ).

Mine seem to spend more time on the bottom half rather than the top half. They are also very curious little fish...they dont seem to see the Yabby as danger but rather as interesting and fun to swim in and around.

Have I read poor information and they really are a top middle and bottom dwelling fish or maybe my tank is set up wrong...dont know how that would be tho. I just dont really want them to die. Any Ideas?

Mine do seem to spend most of their time in the top half of the tank, but they do go to the bottom as well. Pretty much all over, but favoring the upper portion.

Danios in general aren't really bright. They survive in the wild by staying schools in large numbers. Individually they don't seem to be real good about knowing they're potential prey...
And in the wild the dumber ones would get picked off. Since they're farmed separate from predators for aquariums you have some really dense ones.

And it's pretty normal for them to go all over the tank and even the bottom. If you have more decorations at the bottom they're pretty likely to stay around there too. They're not really specificially top or mid swimmers, they forage all over the place. The only specifically stop swimmers are stuff like hatchetfish, and even them I've seen go to the bottom to explore periodically.

I just added 6 Danios two days ago to cycle my tank and even though I have seen them all over the tank, it does seem that mine spend the largest percentage of time near the top.

Thanks for the replies :)

They are Zebra with some leopard a pearl and some gold ones...12 in total.

Our tank is fully cycled been up for a week but we used established media to cycle.

Your right about them not being the brightest! I have seen some swim right into the clays of our yabby. Luckly this one isnt aggressive or seem to keen on the fish but the other one woulda gobbled them up! The tank is pretty spars atm some drift wood for the yabby a hollow log and some hair grass I think is all we have. Looks like not much I can do :(

Maybe its something to do with me being in Australia their top is really my bottom :D

That or I just got the less bright of the bunch...

Lol. I haven't ever gotten a bright bunch of danios before, so don't feel bad. :D

I love my danios they love looking danger right at it's face. They will do circles around some of my more aggressive fish. It's just fun watching them play tag all day and do silly stuff. :D
