I would shoot for at least 75 gallons, preferably larger (since they reach around 12"). I assume you are referring to Datnioides
what type of datnoid are you looking at keeping as only 2 species of datnoid are actually brackish.

I was referring to D. polota, which is the smallest and most common that I have seen. It is brackish, though I am not certain on the others.

Your post is helpful and website even more so. I have been interested in this species for a long while and do a lot of reading before taking the plunge. That said I am still uncertain as to which species is the best. Also limited availability may affect my decision. I do have a store I trust and they have had Dats from time to time and told me they were brackish.
Which species do you recommend? taking into account size, ease of care, availability etc.

Thinking of taking the Datnoid plunge...good decision.
You could start with ITs...they're probably the cheapest and easiest to maintain considering all that goes into caring for them. My ITs were eating frozen foods the day after I got them. STs are similar, just much harder to find...and much MUCH more money.
My NTTs eat frozen/prepared foods, but they are very shy, so you may notice some wasting if they are in with more aggressive dats like NGTs or ATs.
My ATs are by far the most aggressive out of the bunch. They will attack anything that comes between them and their food. I've lost a few tankmates due to the wrath of my ATs.
My NGTs are pretty shy, but they can dish out the hurt when needed. I've had more of a challenge getting them to eat prepared/frozen foods though, so it may take longer to wean them.
Basically, I would decide what you want out of a dat and then get the species that best fits you. ITs are you "standard" dat, STs are the rarest, NGTs are somewhat rare with added color, NTTs are shy and have a lighter coloration, ATs are unique in that they are the only silver dat, and they also have a higher level of aggression.

Thank you for your post and very helpful. The store I visit told me they have had ST and will get them in the future. Not sure if they are correct. I was told these are brackish fish. Small ones 1-3" were $30 and larger $75.

I have been breeding feeder fish in another tank to feed my cichlids. Also breeding ghost shrimp. So I can give live sometimes but will also like to feed other foods.
Any ideas on tank mates for the IT and ST?

indo tigers D microlepis and siamese tiger D pulcher are full fresh water fish, if you want to keep datnoids in brackish you would need to get D polota or D campbelli but even these do well in fresh water.
