Daughter Wants a Betta

There's an awesome hexagonal 5 gallon tank PERFECT for bettas on the Walmart website for $25 with free shipping. It's also got a lot of great reviews.

Clicky.

It comes with almost everything you need. Tank (that's acrylic and won't break if your daughter accidentally knocks it down), filter, and hood. Just have to buy a little 25 watt heater for it, and some gravel and plants.

I bet it would look great in your daughter's room.

Hope this helps. (:

I have 3 bettas one in a 5g minibow, one in a 2.5g minibow and one in a 3g elipse all males ofcourse lol. All three tanks have heaters and filters set on very low current just enough to filter the tank water but set low enough for them to swim and get the 02 they need.

I do weekly water changes on the 2.5g and the 3g and every 2 weeks on the 5g and this has worked for the bettas and me. I feed bettamin flakes daily and freezedried bloodworms once a week with a one day fast for the betta helps them clear their digestive systems Sundays are the fast day.

To decorate the tank with gravel, a small cave & I use silk plants... plastic plants are not good as they can tear their long delicate fins on them. I am not knowledgable about care of real plants in a tank so the experts on that will guide you. Water changes are a must so if you are the primary caregiver that is a responsiblity you can't slack on for the health and wellbeing of the betta. Good luck :)

Females CAN be done in a sorority-type set up, but this is for larger tanks (15-20g minimum...5 females or more) and aggression issues are always a possibility. It is not an easy tank to set up, but can be rewarding.

I respect your reply. But, please keep in mind, just because I know nothing about Bettas... does not mean I know nothing about fish keeping. I have two other tanks set up in my home. I would consider myself a "Veteran" fish keeper.
I am very serious about keeping a betta.
Yes, I will be the primary care giver as my daughter is only five. I would not start a tank if I did not plan to "stick with it"
That's fine, and I completely respect you for it. There are just some betta 'keepers' that really aren't responsible with bettas and I would rather tell a veteran to make sure they're serious than not 'set straight' someone who plans to keep it in a jar the size of a fist, if you know what I'm saying...
Some people might have misunderstood what I was getting at. I do not plan on putting multiple fish in the tank. I was only planning on Two. I however did not know you could not put two females in the same tank.
It can be done in a larger tank, and sometimes in a smaller tank, but unless you want to be dosing melafix nonstop, you're better off with a single betta.
I did know that two males CAN NOT go in the same tank.
I certaintly hoped so, but better safe than sorry.
Again, I respect you a lot, but I'm kind of a paranoid 'better-safe-than-sorry' type of person.
