Dead algee eater

fish scaring each other to death? absolute nonsense.
actually it's true. while fish probably don't scare 'each other' to death and you probably can't scare a fish to death instantaneously, the stress and shock of turning on the lights over the tank in a dark room can and does cause death. in fact, an excellent article on this subject was recently published in either TFH or AFM (i forget which). always best to turn on the room lights first for maybe ten-15 minutes and then turn on the tank lights.

if you've ever turned on the tank lights in a dark room and seen the result ... fish darting about alarmingly and obviously startled, you'd understand the possibilities.

i understand how a person could scare the fish, yes, but not one fish scaring another. Even if the OP's fish died from being "scared", it would take more than 2 days of "scaring" for the fish to be stessed enough to die, if the fish was healthy to begin with.

anyway - the fish is a CAE, not a pleco. also a blessing in disguise, they don't belong in 10g tanks either.

Give me a break, I've been running pleco tanks for years.. get offended because my experience with plecos brought me to different conclusions than yours? Wow.. nice and friendly enviroment here

The common plecos were about a foot long in a 125G with about 8'' of rock/sealed plaster siding and shelving in the tank, if you must know. It was a joint project with a few fish buddies of mine in highschool a few years back. An article of ours was even published in a now defunct fish magazine.
(Magazine was "Aquatic Colors" and the article was published under the name "William LS Jarvis". Probably around the year 2000 when I aquired the fish and most of my equipment)
and as a matter of fact, I still have the male pleco we used for that. He's about 8 years old now and still VERY VERY healthy.. and yes, he still hides in his driftwood some of the time. I feed him Algae wafers and cucumber now because he's on his own but for the first four years of his life he wasn't fed anything special. He would live off of left over food in my community tank.

and you have NEVER seen a pleco slam itself into the glass? Never seen a shocked younger pleco at night have a near heart attack when you turn the lights on? Noone should have to tell you this, but that is NOT good for them.

Also, if you hadn't noticed, we're talking about 'algae eaters'. Maybe it's just me but I would assume any pleco labled an "Algae Eater" would most likely be one that .. you know, ate algae? This is common sense.. we're not talking about all plecos that have different dietary requirements, the thread was.. about.. "algae eaters"

and how can anyone say these fish don't have to have cover? Does it make you feel better convincing yourself that your boyfriend isn't mistreating them by throwing them in a bare tank? I'm sure it looks like the tanks 99% of LFS have their plecos in .. where they bunch up behind the filter intake or sit, piled on top of each other in a corner?

and I would DEFINITELY recommend cover for younger plecos. The older ones do much better without any(I still wouldn't recommend it), however, it's just plain cruel to not have cover for a young pleco in an aquarium.. even the braver common plecos.

and thriving? For God's sake my oldest Pleco is 8 years old and a foot and a half long.. and NO, I will not borrow a digital camera again so I can take pictures of my fish to prove any of this to you.. can't believe you would have the audacity to even ask something like that, like if I want to be a part of this community I have to have pictures with proof of everything I do, WTF?

I don't have anything to prove to you or anyone else on these forums.. if everyone disagrees with me, fine.. I don't need this community. I have perfectly healthy aquariums (except for plants, struggling with plants) I've been running for years, I don't need or want anyone's opinions on wether i know what I'm doing or not.. my old, fat, healthy, strong fish are enough reassurance for me.

I just started really getting into the hobby again and had some questions about new equipment starting to show up. Starting to wonder if it was a mistake asking anything on these forums

he doesn't have a bare tank, it has huge pieces of wood, slate and terra cotta caves, with common, ringlet(panaque), royal, gold nugget, and vampire plecs. what i'm saying is that the fish don't feel the need to hide all day because they are secure in their surroundings, not scared all the time. can they hide? yes. do they always? no.

yes, i've seen fish spook as well, my sailfin always hides when the lights come on for an hour or so, but ends up coming out when he calms down. you weren't talking about the owner scaring the fish, you were talking about the fish scaring each other. do they pop up and say "boo!"? my point is that fish being aggresive to each other will take more than a couple days to kill from the buildup of stress.

most LFS' label plecos as algae eaters. just because an LFS says it, doesn't make it true. most of them would sell their grandmothers as algae eaters if they thought they could make a buck. any site you visit, anyone who cares for the plecos they keep, will tell you that plecos need more than just everyday tank waste, otherwise why do you feed your big plec veggies? why not just sprinkle a little flake on top and let him hunt for it when it sinks?

i am most offended because you know it too, and yet you perpetrate the myth that plecos don't need to be fed. people are always buying these fish, wondering why they die. . .well, if someone had told them the fish needed food (big surprise there) maybe it wouldn't have passed away so soon.

and yes, this thread was about algae eaters, but without the original poster saying what kind of fish s/he has, it doesn't make good sense to say that it will eat algae and needs nothing else. plus, it's not even a pleco, she has a chinese algae eater.

hey, go ask about your equipment, i won't bug you there, but if you make a habit of telling people they don't need to feed their fish, without even knowing what kind of fish it is, you're going to get called every time.
