Dead Fish... Itch or something else

Lost my White Mollie

Question...... would you 1) Leave little white Molly in tank on last leg and let it get picked apart from the other fish or 2) Flush it?

I picked the latter of the two..... I figured it was barely breathing and not moving I looked in the tank and a Green Tiger Barb had it by its tail so I took him out and Flushed him....... Seemed more Humane... I am cleaning and vac'ing the tank today. I will add plenty of salt and begin yet another week of treatment.... On a lighter note.... Some of the other fish that have been laying around for the last 24 hrs are moving around more.....


I guess we will see what Happens.... I will be getting a 5 Gallon tank to set-up as a quaratine/hospital.. for all newcoming fish that I will need to replace... 2 weeks in there before going into large tank right? Ok movie time and cleaning later

Hey! I would've done the same thing with the molly. I hate to see anything suffer. Yeah, I would leave them in the Q tank for two weeks. That's what I want to get next a q tank. I just had to buy my five almost two weeks ago for my platy fry. They'll be two weeks Wednesday. I almost dropped dead this morning. I have had my tank up for three months and I did a vacuum and water changes and did the usual test I did once or twice a day and my nitrites were at 0. :thud: :dance: Thank Goodness, I was about to pull out every hair on my head. The ich came in the middle of my cycling and I don't think that helped my problem either. All I have to say is so far so great with the amquel plus. I got it Saturday when my nitrites were at 2 and after two days use they are at 0. I've been told it can mess with your Ph though. I hope I don't have any other problems. I'm also going to leave it alone and just do one weekly vacuum and water change. :joke:

Someone will hammer you for Flushing a fish. It isn't a very good practice for a multitude of reasons. Euthanization is part of keeping animals, Flushing just isn't a decent method to accomplish it. Here is an article I wrote long ago on euthanization, It covers the reasons why Flushing should never be done, and also gives some ideas of methods that you can use to be humane on those days when you have to do so.

As said be prepared someone may flame You (It comes with the territory) in the future You'll be armed with some better knowledge, and hopefully you won't need to Euthanize more fish anyhow.

First seems better way to go than being froze to death or Slammed, crushed.... Sewage treatment in most plants use Chlorine/chloramines to disinfect effluent prior to leaving plant... I did mention that it wasnt moving at all and barely breathing and had is tail fin in the mouth of a Tiger Barb.... Next time I will consider a different method.... I hoping there won't be a next time.....

Oh yeah I did a 90% water change or close to it..... I did a gravel vac over the entire bottom My Fish are starting too be more active so I hope we are on the right track.... I am pretty sure I knwo why they got Ich.. So for any newbies reading this NEVER do this.....

And Change feeding habits in the same day or with a day or two..... DOnt blast me but I did this and soon after I saw my fisrt sign of Ich and had my First lose of fish... 1 week and 3 fish later I am kicking myself for not really pay attention to what I was doing..... Be careful and cautious with Fish most are fragile.... My 4yr olds white Mollie died and she has not seen it missing yet and I hope she doesn't atleast for a few days :(

My husband does the cutting method for me. It bothers me to much. I definately couldn't use the oil or freezing methods cause I still believe that they can suffer, and that TRULY bothers me. Anyway, hopefully you won't lose anymore fish. I hope your little girl won't be to brokenhearted. My oldest in my tenderheart and thankfully she's 10 now. She's just like me when it comes to animals. My two boys are not the same way about animals. Good luck with the ich mess............. :hi:

So basically you are saying you read the article, And you are now Argueing that Flushing a live fish was still a good method!!!!Subjecting an already sick animal to a slow and painful death is in no way responsible. It may have been too sick to recover, But you still could have done the right thing and put it out of it's misery instead of torturing it for an unknown period of time.

As was clearly stated in the article Freezing is a debateable method, Crushing smashing, cutting, and clove oil are not debateable, they are quick, humane, and effective. If you don't like the physical methods, use the clove oil. Either way you at least know the fish is dead and not suffering needlessly.
Being irresponsible is what causes a lot of the problems in our hobby. people who refuse to research and find out what really occurs do things like Flush live fish and infest waterways with non0native species and pthogens. the next step is certain sepcies are outlawed because of that irresponsibility.
Responsibility dictates that we really shouldn't even Flush fish that we know are fully dead. There are micro organisms that grow in many of our tanks that may have an effect on natural water. Dead fish should be thrown away dry or better yet burued in a garden or Flower pot somewhere.



When I read about you flushing the fish, I was under the impression that you just didn't know better, so I gave you some information that would help you in the future, I really didn't expect you to come back with an untrue argument(Chlorine), supporting your irresponsible action.

As was clearly stated in the article, Treatment of sewage is most often done by promoting bacterial Growth in order to rapidly consume and convert waste. This process does not involve Chlorine or chloramines at all, and is a process that can easily support living fish.I have been on more than one water treatment tour, and it is very common to see Frogs and fish living in the Tanks seemingly quite happy with their environment. This does not mean that your fish lived or that every flushed fish will live, it just means the potential exists, and there is no reason to take the risk when other more responsible options are available.
