Dead Fish...

Yeah... There are little strands of what looks like cotton too. But yes I would say some of the dandruff like stuff looks like sugar sprinkles too. They just float around in the tank kind of like those little "snow globes" my kids might play with around Christmas time.

I was thinking fungus... What the hell do I know though hehe. This is my 1st aquarium. Just basing it on what I have found on the internet.

The scale on that chart is 0 and then .6. I think the water is pretty much clear. So closer to 0 then .6.

I just did a 50% water change today about 2 hours ago.

Ok I just checked it again... Maybe a little higher than I thought. Probably closer to that .06. I went ahead and started doing another 20% water change.

Can a high ammonia cause that dandruff effect?

You need to do more than a 20% change to get Ammonia from .6 to something a little more safe. A 20% change is only going to bring it down to just under .5 or so, which is STILL toxic to many fish. Think 50%, or even better, 75%. A single 50% change does just as much good as 2 1/2 20% changes, and is a LOT less work than that many smaller changes. Just make sure you properly treat your water with Chlorine/Chloramine remover (if you are on city water) and make sure the new water is around the same temp as the old.

If I do a 50% change in my 30g tank...

Can I just add the water in and then treat it for chlorine/chloramine? Or do I need to treat it prior to putting it in thank?

Is it possible my water treatment stuff is giving me a false reading for ammonia? I did about 80% worth of water changes yesterday and last night I was still high.

I add conditioner to the tank and then start refilling.

ok, if the "dandruff" looks like sugar sprinkles and "cotton" you may have a problem with fungus and ich. someone else will have to confirm it...if you can post pictures...

Here are some pics...

Well... She died.

I'm doing another massive water change now. Going to pretty much start over so I don't kill the ones I have left.

Well, I guess it's too late for your platy now, but I would have said that what you saw was ich. You may want to consder treating the tank for ich anyway, though, since it is highly contagious. >_o

Normally, I'd reccommend using a salt treatment, but I'm not sure if/how that would affect your cycling process...?
