Help!! My guppy was ready to give birth and I guess I stressed her out today cleaning the tank. She died not long after I was finished, is there any way I can retrieve the babies and save them even though the mother is dead?:(

Sorry to here about your loss, but live bearers
like guppies, platies ect sometimes die in the
process of giving birth.
If your guppy was used to you cleaning the tank
then that shouldn't have stressed her to much,
but you never know, depends on the fish.
Like PBQ said the chances of the babies still
being alive were very remote.
Don't give up, if at first you don't succeed,
try and try again.
Cheers.

Guppies, like most other livebearers love plenty of company so If you only have a pair, pick up a few other females. This will also give the male other females to choose from and not constantly pester the one female all the time. If you do not have any cover, pick some up, this will ease the stress down alot, a great cover plant is hornwort.
A great site for info for guppies is www.showguppies.com and another one for general livebearer information but still a great site for info is http://tcoletti.tripod.com/thelivebearer.html.

So I was thinking about this because my swordtail is pregnant right now too. I can see at least three babies in her tummy and she has recently got over a bad bout of finrot. I am worried she will eventually stress herself to death. I had to take out her female companion because they kept pecking eachother and both look happier this way.
So my mom's a doctor, and she has preformed many c-sections in her lifetime. I asked her if she would perform one on the fish if it died and she said she would actually try! I would obviously have to do it really soon after the fish died and do the operation in water, maybe a small bowl. I have actually heard of someone successfully accomplishing this task. So if this does happen to me, I'm going to try it.
