I think you are right about inaccuracy, not only that, but if you are not in strong light, its so hard to tell the correct colors on that thing.

amonia will be the problem, more frequent water changes in small amounts will reduce this.

dip sticks like already stated arnt very accurate, so a liquide test kit would / will be better.

Your substrate change is not the problem with the ammonia. What size is the tank?

its a 50 gallon, all the readings are 0 as of right now, It was most likely the ammonia, but Im going to get the liquid test kit now.

I now have 3 pregnant shrimp, Im so excited!
