Who thinks a height of 16" is suitable (or unsuitable) for an oscar? The other dimensions are ok (48"x24"). The tank would not have any substrate (except maybe 5 pounds piled up in a corner for the oscar to move around) and I fill all my tanks up to the rim, so the oscar would get just about the maximum height the tank offers. Just debating whether 16" is ok or not, oscars do get quite thick.

IMO that would be fine, assuming all other aspects in order (maintenance etc.) I am not a fan of the bare tank treatment, I find my oscars much happier in a well decorated tank. While many folks claim it is hard to keep clean and Oscars move things around, I find this to be a less than fair assesment. My tank is highly decorated as have been most of my O tanks over the years, driftwood slate, live plants, more driftwood and so on. My nitrates only rise to 10 when I dose KNO3, and my Oscar doesn't attack the decor, but rather utilizes it for cover and territory boundaries. If you like the bare tank look that's fine but don't be afraid of some reasonable decor or substrate. Good filtration and maintenance are an absolute must in any case though.
