So our platy tank's filter died last night, the motor barely starts up and it won't suck up much water. So now I'm looking to go out and get a new one.

My question for all the smart people here is what's a decent, moderately priced filter for a ten gallon?

:help:

I run the Marineland Penguin 100B Power Filter on my 10g. Finally switched over from my old undergravel filter and it seems to be going well. I really love the Penguin filters, highly recommend them as far as quality and functionality. Mine was around $15 from Big Als online.

haha I should have mentioned, but the Marineland Penguin 100B Power Filter is exactly what we had on the tank that died. lol

I have not had luck with the Penguin biowheel 100B. What about a Penguin Biowheel 150? Or an Regent Aquatech filter? I have found both to be great filters.

In my experience the 100B is the only filter i've been displeased with from penguin. I have their 150, 200, 350 and they all are wonderful!

I like my penguin bio-wheel (100) on my 10G as well.

This may be a dumb question but have you cleaned the impeller and the intake tubes?

yeah if you haven't definitely remove and clean the impeller assembly. I once ran out and bought a new filter because I thought the old one burnt out, but it was just jammed up with gunk and needed to be cleaned. Now I have two. :-)

Also, I use a Whisper 30 in my 10 gal with excellent results.

We opened it up and cleaned out everything. The motor brushes (what the bf calls 'em, I don't know what the technical term is) were just about to fail. And the motor stunk like burnt plastic.

The first thing I checked though was the intake tubes. I figured somehow something got stuck. But no luck. =\

I had a penguin filter in college on a 5 gallon and it was wonderful. That's why I chose it for the 10 gallon. So I may have to just try the 150.

i have had/seen more busted penguin/whispers than anything else. aquaclear is by far the best HOB filter imo, i've never had a problem or had a customer complain about theirs.

I'm using an Aquaclear 20 and I'm quite happy with it. :thm:

I have what was the Aquaclear 10 (I think) on my 10 gallon tank. It works great and has been in use for 6 years or so by me and I bought it used from a friend. Pretty sturdy work horse. And pretty decent price as well.
