Decent Filter for a 10 gallon?

Have you tried the Tom Rapid Mini Canister Filter C-80? It can handle up to 20 Gallons and it's pretty cheap ($20 dollars at Big Al's). Its a good canister filter.

An Aquaclear 20 or an Aquaclear 30 will do nicely for a ten gallon tank. Not only are they priced right, they are also very quiet so they can be run in rooms where it needs to be quiet such as the bedroom. You can fill them with whatever media you want. I have not had any problems with the Aquaclears of all sizes I have running on my tanks, and I have not heard of anyone else having complaints with them either.

True. I have a small, home-rigged bag of purigen between two sponges

I did for a while: the filter was quite noisy, and nothing I tried would quiet it. Then, after I got rid of the expired carbon (and accidentally threw out the biomedia) and went with the new configuration, it's been dead quiet ever since. The placement of the media must've been causing the lid to rattle. I have no complaints about Aquaclears, now.

Great price. I think I'm going to try one of these filters on my 10g tank as a 2nd filter :D

$27 shipped to Albuquerque NM. I'm going to see if I can find a lower price on eBay.

I did notice that if some part of the media needs to be rinsed or changed such as the carbon, I might start to get a slight hum. It is telling me to fix it and it is an easy fix at that. After replacing or rinsing the media it is virtually silent again. It also does not do it every time so I think the way it is placed in the filter makes a difference.

I think we're going to go with the AC. My bf's making a mini canister filter for our Betta's tank (the under gravel one just isn't cutting it) so he is interested in having a "loose media" type filter anyways. I've never worked with one that didn't just have a filter insert so it will be a new adventure for both of us. lol I've been researching it though, and it seems it's the way to go. I really like that I can use it in the situation that I need a hospital tank.

Wish us luck!

bio wheel all the way!!!!!!

I use a Rena Smartfilter 55 on my 10g.

I just put a rena 55 on my 29 gal tank and it works great. Its easy to set up and change the filters. My water parameters are better than they have ever been and the water is crystal clear.

Well we went with an Aquaclear and so far I'm really impressed with it. It's sturdy, quiet and has done a heck of a job with clearing up the tank after we did a gravel vac and water change.
