Dechlorinator treatment..When and Where?

I now have the means to add water directly from the tap when I do water changes...NO MORE BUCKETS!!!:clap: But now I have a new concern. When I used buckets I added the dechlorinator directly to each bucket and stirred it before adding it to the aquarium. Well now I am adding water directly from the tap, about 25 gallons per 10% water change and I am concerned whether or not the chlorine in the water is effecting my fish, or worse yet it may be killing the beneficial bacteria.

Is there something I can add to the water line to treat the water as it leaves the hose?

I live in a place where the water has a very strong Chlorine smell when you run the water so I asssume it has a high concertration of chlorine.
 
i use a python for all my water changes and i just add prime directly to the tank before i start running the water. i have been doing this for about a year now with no adverse reactions to my fish.
 
You can simply add enough dechlor to treat the entire tank volume while you fill the tank back up. Though it sounds like you have a large tank, and that would be a lot of dechlor to be going through.
 
I wouldnt try it. Some people have good luck with it but i am not about to expose any fish to things that might hurt them if i can help it. run your tap to a big garbage can that you purchase specificaly for the purppose of changing water. Then add your declhor to that, and then pump it into your tank.
 
I have had fish for nearly 40 years, and I have used a Python water changer for about 15 years....I don't miss the bucket brigade. I rough calculate that I have changed over 200,000 gallons of water in these last 15 years, and I always just add the dechlorinator directly to the tank as I refill. I have never lost a fish after a water change nor have I seen any signs of stress after a water change, and this includes countless fry. You should be fine.
 
Thanks for the input. I will add the dechlorinator before I add the water and it sounds like it everything should be fine.

I've been in the hobby for 50 years, same experience. I used a capfull of Prime on my 55 gallon yesterday when I changed 50% of the water the water. Often times I see spawning activity right after that.


I used 3 ml of prime on my 29 when I did a 30% change, I had Endler's fry in the tank by that evening.

Just make sure to keep the temp within 5 degrees of what it was before the change
 
I use the python as well. Works great. I add the dechlorinator as the water is added and have never had a problem. Make sure the temp. is as close as possible to the tank temp.

Wow, I think I would rather do Bucket Brigade!

I always add mine to the tank and then fill with the Python. Never had a problem and my fish love me!
