dechlorinator

Most if not all public supplied sytems use chlorine or chloramine. I have too many tanks that get huge water changes, some more than once a week. I'd trip over the buckets and never have enough.

The cost of a water conditioner is minimal and I can just proceed from one tank to the next with the python. Of course, I have two different water sources at my house. Our own private well that is not treated with anything, and a community system, from wells, that is treated.

Ah ok. I can see you'd be changing water all day using buckets :). Yet having a private well has advantages, I envy you!
By the way, what's a python?? I don't think you mean the big snake :)?

It is a hose and faucet (tap) attachment. You can use the water pressure from your tap to draw water out of your tank, and you can fill directly back to the tank, withour lugging water around.

I usually just drain to the outside flower beds as I gravel vac.

Ah, thanks for the tip!! I try and get one. Don't know if they sell them here in Europe, I'll see.

:OT:Sorry Mvirata, I will stay ON topic now

Does'nt putting the chlorinated tap water in to your tank first still kill some bacteria even if you add dechlorinator soon after?

I just add it to the water that I'm adding in. If I put a 3 gallon bucket of water in, I add 5 gallons worth of dechlor. I usually change out 6 gallons, so I end up putting 10 gallons worth of dechlor. Like they say, you can't really overdo it with dechlor. I like to dilute it first.

it's really way better to mix the dechlorinator with the water before adding it to the aquairum, otherwise you are still exposing your fish and bacteria to the chlorine, even if you add dechlorinator later... dechlorinator isn't an instant action.

its fast. i been adding prime to the tank then putting the hose in for a very long time. no ill side effects yet.

Not sure what the bump was for...post 24...??

If so, the chlorinated water would take some time to do any significant damage. I squirt the Prime in the tank and turn on the tap for the refill. Have been doing it that way for 30 yrs.
