So I have a 29g and a 20g at my disposal. I really wanted to try to breed something. I can't decide between dwarf gouramis or dwarf cichlids. I really like the gouramis and have an ideal set up for them, but they're pretty common so I don't want the fish I raise to just sit at some pet store forever. Poor things. I also really like jewel cichlids and was going to get a few of those to raise into a pair. But I wondered if my set up was to small and I'm having trouble finding juvies that aren't from australia. I have ready access to blue/gold ram juvies but I hear the general stock is weak.


Does anyone have any suggestions for me?
 
Convicts will be alright in the 29 gallon, provided they are the only things in there. They breed like bunnies though
 
Can you get any apistogramma species? Cacatuoides are pretty easy, agasizzii too, both have a few strains. Use the 20g for breeding the other for raising fry. Convicts will breed like crazy & you'll have trouble finding homes for all the fry after a batch or 2.

Another possibility are kribensis.
 
Both tanks will be single species. Totally devoted to whatever fish species I choose for my breeding attempt. One will house the adults and one will house the fry as I grow them out. I could maybe get a bigger tank and fill it up part way if territory and swim space is the issue and not gallons.

BTW My LFS is amazing. They were carrying dario dario and I'm pretty sure rasbora kubotai. They just don't always have juvies and their distributors are semi unreliable in timeing.

swordtails are pretty cool, just throwin some stuff out there
 
Bettas take to much work because you can't house the fry together. Though maybe in the future I will breed my piebald double tail betta.
