Swimfins

This is as good as it gets.
I'm planning an 86g planted tank, loosley based on African biotope plants and fish.

I've got the lighting 220watt pc compact.

What's the best way to filter it? I'm considering an xp3 rena filstar. Or fluval 404.
Should I use an underground filter too? Or another power filter?
Is one 200 watt thermometer enough? :bowing:

Thanks.

I would opt for 2 smaller heaters rather than one big one. Less chance of it overheating the tank and there is always at least one working if the other breaks for some reason.

The rena XP3 is a good filter. I would look at trying to do a turnover rate of water of about 5-6 times per hour with a planted tank. So if the filstar isn't enough then you might want to add 2 filters. Undergravel aren't super great for most planted tanks, HOB filters like aquaclears are nice filters but if you want to add CO2 to the tank now or in the future I wouldn't suggest gettign one. But if CO2 looks to be far off in the future adding an HOB and a canister is a great idea.

The Rena FilStars are GREAT filters, I highly recommend them. I think an XP3 would be great for an 86g.
I use my XP2 with the spraybar attachment just below the tank surface, it provides a lot of circulation without surface disturbance that would flush out the CO2.
Congrats again on the lighting, and thanks for recommending ebay - I think I may sell my old tank that way rather than through forum ads.

Thanks Blinky I'll go with the xp3. I highly suggest using ebay.ca to sell the tank. I'm sure you;ll get a decent price, as well, they have to come an get it, no shipping involved. And, if they don't want a bad rating they have to honor their purchase. I'm sure you'll get a fair price. As well, you can start the sale at the price your expecting, so you'll even get that and maybe more.
I've gotten good deals and sold things as well. In US dollars too :)

It's for sale on ebay now - my mom is an ebay regular so she's helping me out.
Thanks again for the recommendation. The only trouble is now I'm cruising ebay and seeing all sorts of stuff I want to buy! :D
